Research overview

Selank was developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics in Moscow as a more stable analogue of tuftsin. The C-terminal Pro-Gly-Pro extension slows breakdown by peptidases, the same strategy used for Semax. A review of tuftsin chemistry and its analogues gives useful background on the parent peptide [1].

Much of the recent mechanistic work uses gene-expression analysis. A 2016 study in Frontiers in Pharmacology measured how Selank changes the expression of genes involved in GABAergic neurotransmission in rodent brain tissue [2]. A 2017 in-vitro study in human IMR-32 neuroblastoma cells compared the expression changes induced by GABA, Selank and olanzapine [3].

Selank is used in vitro for transcriptomic studies in neuronal cell lines, peptide-stability and peptidase-resistance experiments, and as a reference compound in research on tuftsin-derived peptides.
