Research overview

AOD-9604 grew out of structure–function work on growth hormone in the 1990s, when researchers set out to separate activities associated with the hormone’s C-terminal domain from those of the full 191-residue protein. Early characterisation work described the synthetic fragment and compared it with intact growth hormone in rodent and isolated-tissue preparations of lipid metabolism [1].

A 2001 study in mice, including β3-adrenergic receptor knockout animals, compared chronic exposure to full-length growth hormone with exposure to the fragment and examined lipid-handling enzymes and β3-adrenergic receptor expression, helping to define how the fragment differs mechanistically from the parent hormone [2].

Analytical chemists have also studied AOD-9604. Cox and colleagues developed LC-MS/MS methods for detecting the peptide and characterised its in-vitro metabolism, identifying the cleavage products formed in biological matrices. That work is a useful reference for laboratories developing identification or stability assays [3].
